A 35-year-old man has been taken into police custody after being beaten by locals over an alleged attempted rape of a 10-year-old girl in Kushtia city's Char Milpara area today (June 7).
The accused, identified as Achai Sardar, is currently receiving treatment at Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.
The victim has also been admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment and examination.
Confirming the matter, Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud said, "Preliminary evidence suggests that the girl may have been raped or subjected to an attempted rape."
"The accused is currently receiving treatment while in police custody. The victim's family is in the process of filing a written complaint. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law once a case is filed," he said.
Dr Iqbal Hasan, residential medical officer of Kushtia General Hospital, said the girl had been admitted to the hospital, and after medical examination, it would be determined whether the girl had been raped.
According to police and family sources, the incident occurred this morning when the girl was playing near her home with a friend, when the accused lured the duo to a nearby school building.
Once inside, he allegedly confined the 10-year-old girl in a room and sent the other child away.
The second child quickly returned home and informed family members and neighbours about the incident.
Relatives and local residents rushed to the school building and rescued the girl.
The incident spread rapidly throughout the area, triggering public outrage. Angry locals reportedly detained the accused, tied him to an electric pole and beat him.
Later police intervened and took the accused into custody.
