2 former DU Shibir presidents not joining new political party
There have been speculations that they will be joining the new party, but they clarified otherwise

Ali Ahsan Zonaed, joint convenor of the Jatiya Nagarik Committee and former president of Dhaka University's Chhatra Shibir, and Rafe Salman Rifat, joint member secretary of the Jatiya Nagarik Committee and another former president of Dhaka University's Chhatra Shibir, have said that they will not be joining the new political party of the students set to launch on 28 February.
There have been speculations that they will be joining the new party, but they clarified otherwise.
In a Facebook post last night (25 February), Zonaed wrote, "Despite repeated requests, it did not happen [upholding democracy and inclusivity], but I still hope this party will uphold democratic processes and inclusivity. Even after facing unfortunate realities, I wish for this party to break free from the politics of tagging and taboos and pave the way for a new political direction."
He further clarified, "I informed the party leaders a week ago that I would not be part of the new political party led by the youth. I initially chose to remain silent for the sake of broader unity and to keep the nation's attention focused on the new party. However, as speculations continue to circulate, I want to make my position clear."
Emphasising the necessity of a political party led by the leaders of the uprising, Zonaed said, "Such a party is essential for building the future of Bangladesh. I extend my prayers and best wishes for the success of this new political party. May it remain steadfast in the path of honesty and justice, as desired by the people."
Meanwhile, Rafe Salman Rifat, also announced that he would not be joining the new political party.
"I will not be part of the new party to be announced on 28 February. However, this does not mean the end of my political journey," Rifat wrote.
Reflecting on the post-uprising political landscape, he added, "I do not expect to see significant short-term gains from the political momentum created by the mass uprising. However, we must remember that politics is a long race. We must endure with patience and stay in the race for the long haul."
Rifat reiterated his vision for a new Bangladesh, stating, "We aspire to build a truly democratic, inclusive, and discrimination-free nation free from dominance. Unity and moderation will be our strength. Our fight against corruption will continue, as will our resistance against regional aggression. We will give our all to secure the economic emancipation of the people of Bangladesh."
