Ex-Jubo Dal leader Ishaque Sarker, Sher-e-Bangla’s granddaughter Fersamin Haque join NCP
Addressing the ruling BNP, Ishaque remarked that 70% of the population voted for change in the last election
Former Jubo Dal leader and independent candidate for the Dhaka-7 constituency in the February elections, Ishaque Sarker, along with Fersamin Haque Iqbal, granddaughter of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, formally joined the National Citizen Party (NCP) today (24 April).
Several others, including content creator Nuruzzaman Kafi and Mohiuddin Roni, also joined the party during a ceremony held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in the capital's Kakrail.
NCP's Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, alongside spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, welcomed the new members with flower bouquets.
Fersamin Haque joined the event virtually from California, US.
Speaking at the event, Ishaque Sarker asserted that he had observed the NCP for some time and concluded that the party holds the key to the liberation of the people of Bangladesh.
Reflecting on his political journey, he noted his long-standing struggle against fascism.
Addressing the ruling BNP, Ishaque remarked that 70% of the population voted for change in the last election. He warned that if the authorities fail to bring about that change, he would prove how to achieve it through street movements.
Nahid welcomed Ishaque, describing him as an inspiration for the youth. He noted that Ishaque had sacrificed several privileges to stand with the people and the youth.
Nahid also used the platform to reiterate NCP's demand for holding local government elections, alleging that the current administration is "politicising" local institutions by appointing administrators.
He called upon the youth to participate in the upcoming local polls, predicting a victory for the "power of youth" with NCP support.
Ishaque Sarker has a long history with the BNP, having served as the central organising secretary of both the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal.
During the Awami League's tenure, Ishaque was reportedly named in over 300 cases due to his active role in political movements, though he was later acquitted in many of them.
Most recently, he sought the BNP's nomination for the Dhaka-7 seat in the 13th National Election held in February. After being denied the ticket, he contested as an independent candidate, which led to his expulsion from the BNP for violating party discipline.
