18 Japanese soldiers' remains returned to Japan following Ctg exhumation
The remains of 18 Japanese soldiers who died during World War II and were buried at Chattogram War Cemetery have been exhumed and repatriated to Japan.
A 10-member delegation from Japan, nominated by the Government of Japan, carried out the exhumation between 17-28 November.
The Bangladesh Army's Chattogram Area provided security and administrative support under directives of the interim government.
The operation was technically supervised by Lieutenant Colonel Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir (Retd), Bir Protik, a freedom fighter and excavation specialist, Bangladesh Army confirmed through a press release Monday evening.
On 28 November, the Bangladesh Army accorded a Guard of Honour as the remains were formally repatriated, following full military protocols.
This follows a similar exercise in 2024, when 23 Japanese soldiers' remains were exhumed from Mainamati War Cemetery in Cumilla and returned to Japan at the request of the Japanese government.
Officials said such efforts underscore continued cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan in preserving historical memory and honouring the war dead.
