LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has termed 11 July as the 'first resistance day' of the 2024 mass uprising.

"The first blood of the 2024 mass uprising was shed at Cumilla University on 11 July, when police of then fascist regime launched a brutal and unprovoked attack on the students of the university," Asif said.

"The students after that organised a fierce resistance and blockaded the Dhaka-Chattogram highway until 11pm that night. It played a significant role in fuelling the nationwide movement that followed," he added.

Asif made the announcement this afternoon while addressing a memorial meeting organised at Cumilla University marking the anniversary of the police attack last year.

He further said that, like in July 2024, he hopes the students of Cumilla University will always stand for truth and justice.

In response to the students' demands, he also announced the donation of three buses for the university.

The event was presided over by university's Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Haidar Ali, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Masuda Kamal attended it as a special guest.

Government considering "July Charter" on 5 August

Responding to questions from journalists following a discussion session marking the inauguration of the new building of the Cumilla District Bar Association, Adviser Asif said that the government is considering announcing the "July Charter" on 5 August if political parties reach a consensus.

"The work on the July Charter is ongoing," said the adviser, adding, "Earlier, proposals were taken from various political parties, and they have submitted their respective drafts of the declaration to the government. The process is still underway."

"The government is trying to finalise and present the declaration by 5 August. But for that to happen, political parties must come to an agreement. We are hopeful that with political consensus, it will be possible to announce the July Charter on 5 August," Adviser Asif further said.
