10 districts affected, six more at risk

Flood situation has deteriorated in 10 districts as water levels in different rivers crossed danger points due to torrential rains in the past few days.

Six more districts are bracing for the same fate.

The country is witnessing heavy rainfall under the impact of monsoon.

Rainfall may continue for the next 24 hours across the country, the Meteorological office forecast.

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers, accompanied by temporary gusty wind, is likely to occur and it will continue at most places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet, the forecast said.

The government has taken necessary preparations to minimise sufferings of the flood affected people, said Dr Enamur Rahman, state minister for disaster management and relief, on Friday.

Relief has been sent to the deputy commissioners of the 10 affected districts which are Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Chattogram, Bandarban, Cox's Bazar and Nilphamari.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said at least six more districts will be affected within the next three to four days.

“Kurigram, Sirajganj, Tangail, Bogura, Jamalpur and Manikganj will be affected by flood within a few days as the water of the Jamuna is increasing at different points,” Executive Engineer of FFWC Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan told The Business Standard on Friday.

He said the water crossed the danger levels at two points of the Jamuna covering Chilmari of Kurigram and Bahadurabad of Jamalpur district.

The official also said the water would cross danger levels at many points of the rivers Jamuna, Teesta, Surma and some others within 3-4 days as heavy rainfall is likely to continue according to the Met Office.

He also said the water of the rivers surrounding the capital will increase within three days but will not cross danger levels. 

The Disaster Management Ministry is prepared to take necessary steps including sending relief to the affected people, State Minister Enamur Rahman said after a meeting of the inter-ministerial disaster management committee on Friday. 

He said relief and cash have been sent to the DCs, and vacations of all administrative officials have been cancelled.
