1 shot dead, another injured in clash between BNP factions in Munshiganj
A man was shot dead and another injured in a clash between two rival factions of the BNP in Mollakandi Union under Munshiganj district early today (10 November).
The deceased was identified as Arif Mir, 35, while the injured, Imran, is Arif's cousin. Imran was first taken to Munshiganj General Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident. "Police have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence. The situation is tense but under control," he added.
Locals said the clash erupted from a longstanding dispute between Arif, an associate of former union BNP vice-president Awlad Hossain, and Shah Kamal, a follower of district BNP convening committee member Atik Mallik and current union BNP president Ohid Mollah.
Today morning, as Arif and Imran came out of their house in Chardumuria village of Mollakandi Union after waking up around 6am, Shah Kamal and his men allegedly ambushed them and opened fire. Both were hit by bullets. Locals rushed them to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared Arif dead on arrival.
Dr Ruhul Amin, a physician at the hospital's emergency department, confirmed that two people had been brought in with gunshot wounds. "Arif was already dead when he arrived. The other victim was given primary treatment and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital," he said.
Earlier yesterday, another person named Tanjil Ahmed, 30, died after falling ill during the factional clashes around 4:30pm.
The deceased, Tanzil Ahmed, was involved in the politics of the BNP's North District Chhatra Dal. He was known to be a follower of Nuruzzaman Sohel, the president of the North District Chhatra Dal. Tanzil's home was on Krishnapur Daulat Munshi Road in Mymensingh city.
