A ward-level Jamaat-e-Islami leader was detained with cash outside a polling centre in Chuadanga this morning (12 February).
Sharif Hasan, president of ward 9 of Chuadanga municipality Jamaat-e-Islami, was held around 10am in front of the Provati Government Primary School polling centre, confirmed Executive Magistrate Alauddin Al Azad.
The magistrate said Tk79,000 in cash was recovered from Sharif at the time of detention.
Local sources said Sharif was seen loitering suspiciously in front of the polling centre. Residents alerted police, after which the executive magistrate arrived at the scene and took action.
"Sharif initially admitted to keeping the money. A regular case has been filed against him," Alauddin said.
Chuadanga Sadar police station Inspector (investigation) Shahidur Rahman said the detained man was handed over to the executive magistrate for further legal proceedings.
