BNP, Khelafat leaders detained in Faridpur amid polling-centre disruption
Legal action against the detainees will be taken through mobile courts and responsible magistrates, officials say
On the 13th national parliamentary election day, joint forces detained three BNP and Khelafat Majlis leaders in Saltha upazila of Faridpur, over allegations of causing disorder at polling centres.
The arrests took place today (12 February) between 11am and noon at Yusufdia, Narandia, and Joyjhap polling stations.
The detained are Maulana Md Amzad Hossain, president of Faridpur Khelafat Majlis; Abul Kalam, general secretary of Gotti Union BNP; and Md Robiul. All three have been accused of creating disorder at the polling centres.
Officials at the Saltha army camp said the arrests were made jointly by the army and police following allegations of disturbances and attempts at irregularities at the Joyjhap, Yusufdia and Narandia polling centres.
"Legal action will be taken against them. The Bangladesh Army is working to ensure security at polling centres so that voters can cast their ballots without obstruction. Anyone attempting to disrupt the process will face strict measures," they said.
Assistant Returning Officer and Upazila Executive Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam said legal action against the detainees will be taken through mobile courts and responsible magistrates.
He emphasised that any electoral irregularities would be dealt with firmly.
"We aim to deliver a free, fair, and impartial election," he said.
