Jamaat will serve as vigilant, principled and peaceful opposition: Shafiqur
Acknowledging the disappointment among Jamaat supporters, Shafiqur said such feelings are natural but insisted their efforts are not in vain.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said his party will act as a "vigilant, principled and peaceful opposition," following his party's defeat to the BNP in the 13th national election.
In a Facebook post early today (14 February), addressed to citizens, volunteers and supporters, he expressed "profound respect and gratitude" to those who worked for the party over the past few months.
He said many have given their time and energy, while some have faced intimidation and harassment for exercising their democratic rights.
Acknowledging the disappointment among Jamaat supporters, Shafiqur said such feelings are natural but insisted their efforts are not in vain.
He added that his party has secured 77 seats, nearly quadrupling its parliamentary presence and emerging as one of the strongest opposition blocs in recent political history.
Referring to past political shifts, he cited the example of the BNP, reduced to 30 seats in 2008 before returning to form a government in 2026.
He described democratic politics as a long journey focused on earning public trust and holding power accountable.
Shafiqur added that the party recognises the overall election outcome and respects the rule of law.
He reiterated that Jamaat's movement is aimed at strengthening democratic culture, protecting citizens' rights and building a just and accountable state.
