Jamaat agents get two-year jail term for illegal entry into Mirpur polling centre
In connection with the incident, the court also ordered the immediate dismissal of the concerned polling officer, Mosammat Sumona Islam.
A mobile court today (11 February) sentenced two Jamaat-e-Islami agents to prison for illegally entering a polling centre and attempting to influence voting in Mirpur in the capital.
The convicts are Mehedi Hasan Khadem, 32, and Raihan Hossain, 23.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque handed them two years of rigorous imprisonment for unlawfully entering the Shaheed Smrity High School polling centre in Mirpur.
Two smartphones were seized from their possession at the time.
In connection with the incident, the court also ordered the immediate dismissal of the concerned polling officer, Mosammat Sumona Islam, for negligence of duty.
She is reported to be the wife of the general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami's Ward No 6 in the locality.
According to court sources, the two agents, with the assistance of the polling officer, illegally entered the polling centre and attempted to exert influence.
Under Article 73(2B) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, each was also fined Tk5,000, with an additional 15 days of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.
