BNP suspends activities of Shahajadapur union committee over campaigning for Rumeen Farhana
The decision was announced in a press release signed by Sarail Upazila BNP office
The BNP has suspended the activities of Shahajadapur Union unit committee of Sarail upazila for campaigning in favour of independent candidate and expelled BNP leader Barrister Rumeen Farhana in the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency.
The decision was announced in a press release signed by Sarail Upazila BNP office secretary ABM Salauddin Biplob last night (28 January), but the committee members were not expelled from the party.
Rumeen Farhana, a former BNP international affairs assistant secretary, had sought the party's nomination for the Brahmanbaria-2 seat, which comprises Sarail, Ashuganj and parts of Bijoynagar upazilas. However, the BNP left the seat to its alliance partner Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, supporting its nominated candidate Maulana Junayed Al Habib.
After failing to secure the party nomination she decided to contest the election as an independent candidate. She was later expelled from the BNP by the central leadership on December 30.
Party and local sources said that since the start of the election campaign, most leaders of the Shahajadapur Union BNP had been actively campaigning for Rumeen Farhana, taking a position against the alliance-backed candidate and creating internal controversy.
In response, the Sarail Upazila BNP decided to suspend the Shahajadapur Union committee.
Sarail Upazila BNP President Anisul Islam said most members of the committee were not acting in line with party discipline, prompting the suspension of the entire committee to ensure discipline within the party.
