13 detained for entering polling centres in Ashulia ahead of vote
They are currently being held at Ashulia Police Station.
The Army detained 13 people for allegedly entering two polling centres in Ashulia of Dhaka-19, early today (12 February) and later handed them over to the police, officials said.
The detainees were taken into custody around 1am from the New Model School and College and Nalam polling centres in Ashulia's Dhamsona union.
They are currently being held at Ashulia Police Station, with further legal action subject to the decision of the Judicial Magistrate on election duty, confirmed Asgar Hossain, inspector of Ashulia Police Station
Police said the Army conducted separate drives following allegations that individuals had entered the two polling centres at night. A total of 13 people were detained and handed over to Ashulia Police Station.
The identities of the detainees and whether they are supporters of any political party or candidate could not be confirmed immediately.
Assistant Returning Officer and Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Saiful Islam told TBS the detainees were taken into custody over allegations of entering polling centres, but the exact purpose remained unclear.
"It has not yet been confirmed exactly for what purpose they entered the centres or whether they are followers or supporters of any party or candidate. There are also residential houses there. Additionally, the presiding officers of the respective centres have no complaints; for this reason, we have not been able to take any action yet."
He added that the detainees will be presented before a judicial magistrate, who will decide on further measures.
