US House votes to force Trump to end Iran war

The US House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to require President Donald Trump to end the war with Iran and withdraw US troops, marking the third time lawmakers have approved a measure seeking to curb his military authority.

The resolution passed 220-204, with all Democrats and seven Republicans supporting it. The vote came weeks before the November midterm elections and during one of the chamber's final voting sessions before lawmakers return to their districts to campaign, says the CNN.

Seven Republicans backed the measure, up from four who supported the previous two House resolutions. Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa, and Nancy Mace of South Carolina, joined the four previous Republican supporters: Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

Nunn said after the vote that he would not support "another open-ended war", arguing that Congress had a constitutional responsibility to act while protecting Americans and putting pressure on Iran.

House Republican leaders did not direct members how to vote on the resolution. Trump, however, has criticised Republicans who have opposed his military policy, framing such votes as a test of support for his approach, according to CNN.

The vote follows an earlier effort in the Senate to limit Trump's war powers. That measure initially passed, but a Republican senator later changed their vote after pressure from the White House, preventing the effort from advancing. Senate Democrats plan to bring the House measure up for a vote later this week, although it is unclear whether it has enough support to pass.

The House action comes as the conflict has increased political and economic pressure on the administration. A summertime CNN poll found that 67% of respondents said Trump's decisions on military action in Iran had harmed the United States, according to CNN.

US diesel prices have also risen above $6 a gallon. Reuters reported that the national average surpassed that level for the first time in September, with supply disruptions linked to the conflict among factors contributing to higher fuel costs.

Democrats have repeatedly forced Republicans to vote on the administration's military campaign during 2026, while funding for the conflict has also faced resistance in Congress. The latest House vote adds to pressure on the administration as lawmakers approach the 3 November midterm elections.
