Trump breaks silence on NYC mayor-elect Mamdani, vows US 'not going communist'
The comments marked the first time the US President Trump had substantively addressed the New York mayoral race since Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, defeated both Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, whom Trump had publicly backed just one day before the polls closed
US President Donald Trump lashed out vehemently against New York City's mayor-elect, Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, in remarks from Miami yesterday (5 November), using the electoral victory to launch a broadside against the Democratic Party and its core ideology.
Addressing an audience at the American Business Forum, Trump painted Mamdani's win as evidence of a dangerous shift toward the radical left, suggesting his politics reflected the broader views of Congressional Democrats, reports CNN.
After last night's results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear – we have a choice between communism and common sense
"If you want to see what Congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the results of yesterday's election in New York — where their party installed a communist as the mayor of the largest city in the nation," Trump declared. "Remember, I said we will never have a socialist elected to any post in our country? I used to say that… we skipped socialists, we put in the communists instead."
The comments marked the first time the US president had substantively addressed the New York mayoral race since Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, defeated both Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, whom Trump had publicly backed just one day before the polls closed.
President Trump intensified his rhetoric by directly connecting the New York result to a national ideological crisis, according to the CNN report.
"After last night's results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear – we have a choice between communism and common sense," he stated.
Concluding his remarks with a definitive statement aimed at reassuring his base, he firmly vowed to block any perceived communist takeover while he holds office.
"And as long as I'm in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape or form."
Trump further claimed that the policies of the Democrats were so extreme that "Miami will soon be the refuge for those fleeing communism in New York City."
While Mamdani's win was the most talked about event, it wasn't the only one for his party. Democrats swept a trio of races yesterday in the first major elections since Donald Trump regained the presidency, elevating a new generation of leaders and giving the beleaguered party a shot of momentum ahead of next year's congressional elections.
At just 34 years old, Zohran Mamdani has been elected the 111th mayor of New York City, becoming the city's first Muslim mayor, its first South Asian-heritage mayor, its first Africa-born mayor and the youngest to hold the office in more than a century.
