Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a secret trip to Abu Dhabi for an hourlong meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, specifically to ask the Emirati leader to publicly deny a recent media report, according to people briefed on the visit, says the Associated Press.
The report, published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, alleged that Sheikh Mohamed had warned Netanyahu about an impending Hamas attack shortly before the 7 October 2023 strike on southern Israel.
Netanyahu's office had already denied the Haaretz report before the trip, but offered no immediate comment on the secret meeting itself. The details of Netanyahu's request were shared by individuals briefed on the visit who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The UAE Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the report or the specific request. It said the UAE maintains "open and direct lines of communication" with Israel and shares relevant intelligence.
The UAE state news agency WAM later confirmed that the visit took place, saying the two leaders discussed bilateral relations.
