India denies reports that Iran wants release of seized oil tankers in exchange for safe transit through Hormuz
India’s coastal authorities reportedly seized three oil tankers under US sanctions over alleged links to Iran.
India has dismissed reports claiming that Iran sought the release of three US-sanctioned oil tankers seized by New Delhi in exchange for ensuring safe passage for Indian-flagged vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
"This report is baseless," Indian news agency PTI yesterday (16 March) quoted top government sources as saying, adding that no such discussion has taken place between Indian and Iranian authorities.
India's coastal authorities reportedly seized three oil tankers under US sanctions over alleged links to Iran.
However, the sources said the vessels are not owned by Iran.
Officials said India remains in contact with Iran to ensure the safe transit of more than 20 Indian-flagged merchant vessels, most of which are carrying oil and gas, through the Strait of Hormuz.
They added that two Indian-flagged LPG carriers carrying a total of 92,712 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas crossed the Strait early on Saturday (14 March) following discussions between the two sides.
