The influx of foreign students is vital for American universities, and especially public universities, which have become increasingly dependent on foreign students to fund their budgets.
Here are the 10 foreign countries that send the most students to American colleges according to 2020 Open Doors report for the 2019-20 academic year:

- China
From China, 372,532 students came to the US to study in 2019-20 academic year. They amount to 34.6% of the total foreign students.
- India
For the 2019-20 academic year, 193,124 Indian students flied to the US. They make up 18.0% of the foreign students in US.
- South Korea
The Asian country sent 49,809 students to the US making up 4.6% of the total foreign students.
- Saudi Arabia
From Saudi Arabia, 30,957 went for higher studies in the US. They amounted to 2.9% of foreign students.
- Canada
The neighbouring country sent 25,992 of its students, which was 2.4% of the total number.
- Vietnam
From Vietnam, 23,777 students came to the US. They made up 2.2% of the total.
- Taiwan
In the 2019-20 academic year, 23,724 students went to American colleges from Taiwan. They amounted to 2.2% of the total foreign students.
- Japan
Japan sent 17,554 students in the US, making 1.6% of the total.
- Brazil
A total of 16,671 students from Brazil went to US colleges, making 1.6% of the total foreign students.
- Mexico
The Southern neighbor sent 14,348 of its students to the US for college for 2019-20 academic year which made 1.3% of the total foreign students.
