India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has said it dismantled a well-organised gold smuggling syndicate operating along the Bangladesh border in West Bengal and seized around 24kg of foreign-origin gold worth nearly Rs34 crore.

All seven people allegedly involved in the smuggling operation have been arrested.

Acting on intelligence, DRI officials intercepted seven people travelling on separate motorcycles from Krishnanagar towards Chakdaha in Nadia district of West Bengal, according to an official statement issued yesterday (1 July).

During personal searches, officials recovered 180 pieces of foreign-marked and defaced gold bars concealed inside specially tailored cloth belts worn around their waists to evade detection, the statement said.
