Modi, Trump discuss trade, defence and energy in phone call
The conversation comes ahead of planned talks in Washington between Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on a bilateral trade deal.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (30 September) held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, discussing bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies, among other areas.
Describing the conversation as "productive", Modi said the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including efforts to advance global peace and security.
"Had a productive conversation with President Trump. We reviewed our bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas. We agreed to maintain close engagement to take our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward," Modi wrote in a post on his official X account.
The call came days before Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who is currently in the United States, is scheduled to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to give fresh impetus to a bilateral trade deal.
In a separate official readout, the two leaders were said to have reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas of mutual interest.
"They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement to deepen cooperation for the benefit of the people of both countries," the readout said.
