South Asia devastated by heavy rains, 600 dead
Heavy rains, monsoon rains and a series of storms have caused floods and landslides in various countries in South Asia. At least 600 people have died and hundreds more are missing. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka have been the worst affected. More than 300 people have been killed on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia; 145 people have died in Thailand; more than 130 have died in Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka. Thousands of people are in temporary shelters. Meteorologists say that the extreme weather is due to Typhoon Koto and Cyclone Senyar, which have intensified the monsoon and increased the risk of floods and landslides.
