George Russell stuns F1 with dominant Australian Grand Prix victory
George Russell delivered a stunning performance to win the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, giving Mercedes a dream start to the new Formula One season. The British driver controlled the race in Melbourne after an intense early battle with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and praised his team for the incredible effort behind the scenes that made the victory possible.
A key strategic decision during a Virtual Safety Car helped Mercedes take control of the race, ultimately securing a dominant one-two finish with rookie Kimi Antonelli in second place. Leclerc completed the podium after Ferrari's strategy gamble failed to pay off.
Elsewhere on the grid, Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in his debut race for Ferrari; while reigning champion Lando Norris crossed the line in fifth. Max Verstappen also produced a strong recovery drive to finish sixth after starting near the back of the grid.
Russell's victory places him at the top of the championship standings and sends an early warning to the rest of the field. With Mercedes appearing competitive again and the 2026 season only just beginning, the big question now is whether George Russell can turn this momentum into a serious Formula One title challenge.
