Mirza Abbas undergoes brain surgery at Evercare Hospital
A CT scan conducted earlier in the morning revealed a deterioration in Mirza Abbas's condition, said Dr Rafiqul Islam.
Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed, the prime minister's political adviser and lawmaker for Dhaka-8, underwent brain surgery at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka today (13 March).
Dr Rafiqul Islam, health affairs secretary of the BNP, said a medical board of specialist physicians, comprising some of the country's leading neurosurgeons, had reviewed Abbas's condition and decided that the surgery was necessary.
"The first round of operation began at 3pm and ended at around 6:15pm. The second round of surgery started at 6:30pm and ended at 8:30pm," a member of the medical board told reporters.
"If Mirza Abbas's physical condition improves somewhat, he will be taken to Singapore. The family has already made all necessary preparations, including arranging an air ambulance to take him there," the doctor said.
Dr Rafiqul said a CT scan conducted earlier in the morning revealed a deterioration in Mirza Abbas's condition, prompting the convening of an emergency virtual medical board.
The consent of family members was also obtained, he added.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Evercare Hospital after Jummah prayers today, when the medical board briefed him in detail on the politician's condition.
Earlier, BNP Media Cell Member Shairul Kabir Khan had said that on doctors' advice, preparations were being made to transfer Mirza Abbas to Singapore by air ambulance.
He was supposed to be flown to Singapore at 6pm today for advanced medical treatment.
Mirza Abbas, also a BNP Standing Committee member, was admitted to Evercare Hospital after falling ill on Wednesday evening (11 March).
According to sources close to the family, he suddenly lost consciousness while drinking water during iftar. As his condition did not improve, he was later admitted to the hospital late at night for treatment.
