MTB redefining aspirations through its credit cards
From airport lounges to EMI dreams, MTB is transforming the credit card into a gateway for experiences that matter
Over the past few years, I've witnessed credit cards in Bangladesh evolve from being mere payment tools to becoming powerful gateways to experiences that redefine modern living.
Today, they do far more than offer convenience — they are reshaping lifestyles and expanding aspirations. With features like 0% EMI facilities, high-end electronics and premium mobile brands have become attainable for many more people. Dining offers and privileges now make fine dining at five-star hotels a regular indulgence rather than a rare treat. Attractive travel deals are inspiring more Bangladeshis to explore the world with ease. In effect, credit cards are empowering customers, making aspirational lifestyles more accessible and transforming the way we experience life.
Despite the growth of the middle class, credit card penetration in Bangladesh remains modest compared to regional peers. Regulatory requirements have historically limited expansion. For example, until recently, applicants had to provide proof of income tax return filings — a requirement only 4 million people met last year. Even though this was lifted in July, applicants still need a Tax Identification Number (TIN), limiting the potential market to roughly 11.5 million people. As a provider of unsecured lending products, we take responsible growth seriously. At MTB, our approach is to combine robust credit evaluations with a smooth, customer-friendly onboarding process. We've developed tailored assessment policies for different professional segments — for instance, criteria for doctors differ from those for teachers. This targeted approach has allowed us to accelerate credit card acquisition while keeping risk management prudent and sound.
From EMI plans for the latest gadgets to exclusive privileges that turn everyday moments into extraordinary experiences, MTB is making credit cards a passport to a richer life
As digital transactions and e-commerce surge in Bangladesh, concerns over fraud and data security have grown in equal measure. At MTB, safeguarding our customers is not an option — it is our commitment. We constantly educate our cardholders on safe practices, such as avoiding sharing full card numbers, PINs, or CVVs, and transacting only on trusted platforms. We have invested heavily in IT security infrastructure and are PCI DSS certified, ensuring our systems meet global data protection standards. Regular updates and upgrades keep us ahead of emerging threats. For us, security is not just a technical necessity — it is the foundation of trust that sustains the digital economy.
Cashback and rewards have become standard in the industry, but at MTB we strive to go further. We want our credit cards to offer not just benefits, but a complete lifestyle experience. That is why we are proud to operate the largest network of airport lounges in Bangladesh — eight lounges across six airports — offering comfort and convenience to our cardholders. For international travelers departing from Dhaka, we offer unlimited airport pick-and-drop and meet-and-greet services, ensuring a stress-free journey from doorstep to departure. Our loyalty programme, MRewardz, is among the most rewarding in the country, with accelerated earning campaigns and attractive redemption options. Premium cardholders, including UnionPay Diamond, Mastercard World, and Visa Signature customers, enjoy complimentary international lounge access. At MTB, we design our credit cards to be more than payment tools — they are lifestyle companions, blending luxury, convenience, and value.
I firmly believe Bangladesh holds immense potential for credit card growth, but achieving this requires enabling policies. Relaxing ceilings on credit limits, allowing more flexibility for international transactions, simplifying onboarding requirements, and easing travel and business quotas would significantly boost adoption. With balanced, forward-looking regulatory support, the credit card industry can expand responsibly. This will not only foster greater financial inclusion but also empower consumers to fulfil their aspirations — driving a truly cashless, connected, and aspirational Bangladesh. At MTB, we are committed to leading this transformation. Credit cards are not just a product for us — they are a way to redefine the future of lifestyle and finance in Bangladesh.
