The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the appointment of Phil Simmons as the Head Coach of the National Men's Cricket Team until the ICC ODI World Cup in October–November 2027. The former West Indies batsman had initially been contracted until the end of the ICC Champions Trophy but will now continue his tenure in charge of Bangladesh cricket.
Simmons, 61, first took over the role in October 2024 and oversaw Bangladesh's campaigns against South Africa, Afghanistan, the West Indies, and the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan and the UAE. His extended stay signals the board's commitment to continuity and long-term progress for the national team.
"I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis," Simmons expressed. "The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead."
Reflecting on his experience so far, he added: "Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special."
Simmons' coaching credentials are extensive. Following an international playing career in which he represented the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1987 and 1999, he transitioned into coaching with Zimbabwe in 2004. He went on to lead Ireland for eight years from 2007 to 2015, playing a pivotal role in their rise in international cricket. He also served two terms as West Indies Head Coach, guiding them to the ICC World T20 title in 2016, and had a stint with Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019.
With his wealth of experience and Bangladesh's aspirations to compete with the world's best, Simmons' appointment offers an opportunity for the Tigers to build a formidable unit over the next three years. As Bangladesh sets its sights on the 2027 World Cup, the seasoned coach will aim to shape a side capable of making a significant impact on the global stage.
