Famous brother-in-laws in cricket

There are a number of cricketers who besides being teammates, have been tied to each other by one marrying the sister of the other.

The Business Standard (TBS) draws a list of some famous brother-in-laws cricketers to have played the sport.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad

The two famous brother-in-laws of Bangladesh cricket need no introduction.

The celebrated cricketers of the country married two sisters from the same family.

Mahmudullah Riyad tied the knot with Jannatul Kawsar Mishti in 2011.

Three years later, Mushfiq married Riyad's sister-in-law Jannatul Kifayet Mondi.

Akram Khan and Faruk Ahmed

Former cricketers and selectors of Bangladesh cricket, Akram Khan and Faruk Ahmed are also brother-in-laws.

Akram Khan's wife Sabina Akram and Faruk Ahmed's wife Shahria Yasmin are sisters from the same family.

A fun fact, despite Akram Khan being junior to Faruk Ahmed, he married the elder sister while Faruk married the younger one.

Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath

One of the most celebrated brother-in-laws to have graced the sport, the diminutive pair of Gavaskar and Viswanath were both born in 1949, captained India, and scored more than 16,000 Test runs between them.

Their friendship from the days of the Charminar Challenge in Hyderabad has stayed.

Alec Stewart and Mark Butcher

These two Surrey mates fought through a tough decade for English cricket in which success for the national team proved hard to come by.

While Stewart's place in the side was more or less secure - he bowed out as one of England's greats - Butcher's was much less so, and there was plenty to bear off the field as well.

Married to Stewart's sister, Judy, with whom he had a daughter, Butcher was involved in an affair that led to the marriage breaking up.

Jahangir Khan and Baqa Jilani

Jahangir Khan, the doyen of the famous Khan clan of Pakistan (that produced three-Test captains) was among those who had laid the foundation of Pakistan cricket.

On the other hand, had Baqa Jilani not insulted CK Nayudu, he may have ended his career by playing more than just one Test.

But that one Test helped Jilani, the first man to take a Ranji Trophy hat-trick, and Jahangir Khan make this list as brother-in-laws.

Darren Lehmann and Craig White

Ashes rivals linked by marriage are certainly not a common phenomenon, but the foundation of that was laid when Lehmann had joined Yorkshire.

White had asked his sister Andrea to show "Boof" around Scarborough; Cupid stepped in subsequently, and Andrea (perhaps) had trouble taking sides when Lehmann and White played three Ashes Tests against each other.
