World Cup debutants Cabo Verde frustrate Spain in goalless draw
Ranked 67th in the world and representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, Cabo Verde produced one of the early surprises of the tournament.
Cabo Verde marked their first-ever Fifa World Cup appearance with a memorable 0-0 draw against European champions Spain on Monday (15 June), frustrating one of the tournament favourites with a disciplined defensive display and a standout performance from veteran goalkeeper Vózinha.
The result leaves both sides level on one point in Group H ahead of the later match between Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Spain dominated possession throughout much of the contest but struggled to convert control into clear-cut chances. Their best opportunities came late in the first half, when Ferran Torres struck the crossbar from close range before Vózinha reacted quickly to tip Mikel Oyarzabal's follow-up header over the bar.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper continued to frustrate Spain, producing further saves to deny Torres and Aymeric Laporte before halftime.
Spain hoped the introduction of teenage winger Lamine Yamal in the second half would provide a spark, but Cabo Verde remained resilient and held firm to secure a historic point.
The African side even threatened to complete an even greater upset late on, creating chances of their own as Spain struggled to find a breakthrough.
Spain fail to make dominance count
Despite arriving at the tournament as one of the favourites, Spain once again found themselves unable to translate possession into goals.
Since lifting the World Cup in 2010, Spain have failed to win a knockout match at the tournament, and Monday's display echoed the frustrations that contributed to their disappointing exits in 2018 and 2022.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente had described his squad as the strongest in the competition, but Spain lacked their usual attacking fluency for long periods.
The absence of fully fit wingers also appeared to affect their performance. Yamal started on the bench as he continues his recovery from injury, while Nico Williams, who endured an injury-hit season with Athletic Bilbao, was not introduced until the closing stages.
Spain's first significant chance arrived six minutes before halftime when Marc Cucurella's cross found Torres, whose effort rattled the crossbar. Vózinha then recovered to keep out Oyarzabal's looping header.
Torres tested the Cabo Verde goalkeeper again moments later, while Laporte's header from a corner was also brilliantly saved.
Yamal lifts Spain, but Cabo Verde hold firm
Cabo Verde comfortably contained Spain for much of the second half before Yamal entered the match after the second cooling break.
Regarded as one of the tournament's brightest young stars, the Barcelona winger immediately injected energy into Spain's attack and lifted the atmosphere inside Atlanta's air-conditioned stadium.
His first involvement created an opening for substitute Mikel Merino, while he also played a key role in the move that led to Oyarzabal's deflected effort — Spain's best chance after the break.
However, Cabo Verde continued to defend resolutely and nearly snatched a famous victory in the closing moments when Dani Borges directed a header towards goal, only for Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón to make a comfortable save.
Ranked 67th in the world and representing a nation of just over 500,000 people, Cabo Verde produced one of the early surprises of the tournament with a result that will be celebrated long after their World Cup debut.
Spain will look to bounce back when they face Saudi Arabia on Sunday, while Cabo Verde take on Uruguay in Miami.
