Vozinha earns Cabo Verde historic draw with Spain on World Cup debut
Vozinha made seven saves during the game, delivering what were described as "outstanding saves" to keep Spain from breaking through
Cabo Verde captain Vozinha produced a string of saves to help his side secure a historic 0-0 draw against Spain in the nation's tournament debut, earning a landmark result in the country's international football history.
Spain controlled possession for much of the match and introduced attacking options including teenage player Lamine Yamal, but the 40-year-old goalkeeper held firm as Cabo Verde claimed a memorable achievement, says India Today.
Vozinha made seven saves during the game, delivering what were described as "outstanding saves" to keep Spain from breaking through. Among the key moments was a reaction stop to push Mikel Oyarzabal's header over the bar, while he also denied efforts from Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte.
The appearance marked another milestone in Vozinha's career, making him the second-oldest player to make a FIFA World Cup debut at the age of 40, behind Egypt's Essam El Hadary, who made his debut at 45.
Although he has earned 90 international caps since making his debut for Cabo Verde in 2012, the match represented his first appearance on football's biggest stage.
Vozinha has played professionally in Cabo Verde, Moldova, Romania, Cyprus and Portugal, where he currently plays for Chaves.
For Cabo Verde, the draw represented a significant moment in the nation's football history, with Vozinha acting as the team's captain and "last line of defence" in preserving the result.
