Cabrera explains decision to leave Fahamedul out of Bangladesh squad

Fahamedul Islam has been left out of Bangladesh's final squad for the 25 March clash against India, despite initially being included in the preliminary list at coach Javier Cabrera's request.

It was no surprise to see Hamza Choudhury included in Bangladesh's preliminary squad for the match against India on 25 March. However, the selection of Italy-based Fahamedul Islam was unexpected. The 18-year-old midfielder was called up at the insistence of head coach Javier Cabrera, yet he did not make the final squad.

After returning to the country on Tuesday, Cabrera spoke about Fahamedul at Dhaka airport, explaining his absence. "Fahamedul did not travel to Dhaka. He spent a week with us in Saudi Arabia. He is a talented player, but he needs more time," said the Spanish coach.

Fahamedul , seen as a promising young talent, was given the chance to train with the national team in Saudi Arabia. However, despite earlier praise, Cabrera now believes he is not yet ready for senior international football. "Training with the squad in Saudi Arabia was an important experience for him. He performed well, but at this moment, other players are better prepared. He needs more time," Cabrera added.

The national team coach has faced scrutiny over his squad selections and player management. His decisions in the build-up to the Asian Cup qualifier against India have raised further questions. Naming an Italy-based player in the 38-man preliminary squad was surprising, but his sudden omission from the final team has only added to the debate. Cabrera also made the unusual decision to cut eight players from the squad before they had even entered training camp.

Bangladesh's Saudi Arabia tour was meant to include three warm-up matches, but in the end, only one was played before the team returned home. These inconsistencies have left many questioning the coach's approach.

Hamza's arrival lifts Bangladesh camp

Amidst the uncertainties, the arrival of Hamza Choudhury has provided a much-needed boost. The English Premier League footballer's decision to play for Bangladesh is seen as a major positive.

"Everyone in the squad is excited to train with him. I have been in discussions with him every week. Now, we will plan together to beat India," Cabrera said.

Bangladesh's rivalry with India remains one of the most competitive in South Asian football. The national team has not beaten India since 2003, but Cabrera believes Hamza's presence strengthens the squad.

"We are undoubtedly stronger than before. His arrival has lifted our spirit," he added.

Hamza arrived in Sylhet yesterday morning and visited his family home in Habiganj. He is expected to join the team at their hotel in Dhaka tonight.
