Boat race demanding measures to save Karatoya

A boat race was held on the Karatoya river in Bogura on Friday, as part of an ongoing movement demanding measures to save the river from pollution and encroachment.

Bogura Sammilita Sangskritik Jote and Bojora Jubo Sangha jointly organised the competition with the assistance from the Bogura district police, on the occasion of Community Policing Day.

Police Superintendent Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan was present as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners after the competition.

The team namely "Allah Bharasa" became the champion in the two and a half kilometre race from SP Bridgeghat in the town to Bojora.

The boats of "Pankhiraj" and "Amin Haque" secured first and second runners' up positions in the contest respectively.

About five years ago, the High Court ordered the authorities concerned to take actions in saving the river from pollution and encroachment.  But the directives went largely unheeded.
