Yungblud releases a darker Zombie
Yungblud has launched 2026 with a major collaboration, releasing a reworked version of his hit single 'Zombie' featuring The Smashing Pumpkins. The track marks the first time the influential alternative rock band have appeared on another artist's recording, a rare moment in their more than 30-year career.
Originally featured on Yungblud's fourth studio album Idols, Zombie has become the British artist's fastest-streaming solo release, passing 100 million streams worldwide. The song is nominated for best rock song at the 2026 Grammy Awards, while Idols is also in contention for best rock album.
The new version preserves the emotional intensity of the original but adopts a heavier, darker tone. Yungblud opens the track before Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan joins on the second verse, as thicker guitar textures and a more ominous atmosphere heighten the themes of grief, trauma and emotional isolation.
Yungblud has previously cited Siamese Dream as a key influence while writing Zombie, explaining that he initially held back the song's heavier elements. The collaboration allowed him to revisit that original instinct, an idea that took shape after he contacted Corgan directly. Recording took place in Chicago, alongside a music video directed by Charlie Sarsfield.
The release follows a standout year for Yungblud, whose Idols topped the UK Albums Chart. He is set to continue touring internationally throughout 2026.
