Spider-Man: Brand New Day surges past $1.8b worldwide
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on course to lead the North American box office for a third consecutive weekend, as newcomers “The End of Oak Street” and “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” compete for third place.
The new Spider-Man adventure, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has crossed the $1b mark at the global box office, becoming the second fastest movie to reach that milestone after 2019's "Avengers: Endgame".
The Sony Pictures release earned $19 million on Friday (14 August) and is projected to gross about $67 million over the weekend. That would take its domestic total to roughly $782.8 million after 17 days, moving it to No 5 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, just behind Avatar at $785.2 million and ahead of Top Gun: Maverick at $718 million.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently became the fastest film to surpass $700 million domestically.
Universal's The Odyssey is expected to retain second place in its fifth weekend, with a projected $23 million, lifting its domestic total to about $504.4 million.
Warner Bros' The End of Oak Street earned $8.1 million on Friday (14 August), including previews, and is projected to open at around $20 million. Directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the $80 million sci-fi survival film follows a family whose suburban neighbourhood is overrun by prehistoric predators. It received a B CinemaScore.
Paramount Pictures' PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie also earned about $7.3 million on Friday (14 August), including previews, and is projected to debut near $20 million. Directed by Cal Brunker, the animated film features the voices of Carter Young, Mckenna Grace, Terry Crews, Jennifer Hudson and Snoop Dogg. It received an A CinemaScore and has earned $38.3 million from 52 international markets.
The previous film, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie opened to $22.7 million domestically in 2023 and grossed $205 million worldwide.
