The Social Network sequel sets 2026 release date
Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer and director of The Social Network (2010), is set to revisit the story of Facebook in his latest film, The Social Reckoning, scheduled for release on 9 October 2026, Sony Pictures announced Saturday.
The new drama, described as a "companion piece" to Sorkin's earlier hit, shifts focus from Facebook's founding to the fallout nearly two decades later. It centers on Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison (Anora), a former Facebook engineer who leaked internal documents exposing the platform's role in spreading misinformation and harming young users. The story follows Haugen's collaboration with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), whose reporting became known as "The Facebook Files."
The cast also features comedian Bill Burr and Succession star Jeremy Strong, with Strong portraying Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Sorkin will both write and direct, producing alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. Production begins next month.
The Social Network grossed $226 million worldwide and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including best picture. Sorkin won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, one of three Academy Awards the film claimed. Expectations are high for this long-awaited follow-up.
