SM Sultan birth centenary exhibition celebrates artist’s legacy
Exhibition at DU concludes tomorrow

An exhibition of artworks and sculptures is under way at Dhaka University's Zainul Gallery, marking the birth centenary of celebrated artist Shaikh Mohammed Sultan, widely known as SM Sultan.
Organised jointly by the Charupith Art Research Institute and Terracotta Creatives, with support from Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts, the SM Sultan Memorial Gallery, and the Dhaka University Film Society, the festival honours Sultan's artistic legacy and philosophy through multiple programmes.
The event features 95 paintings, 13 sculptures, and seven terracotta pieces, alongside a separate exhibition of 63 paintings by child artists and a seminar.

Works by renowned artists such as Mohammad Yunus, Hamiduzzaman Khan, Ivy Aman, Dr Azharul Islam Chanchal, Bimanesh Biswas, Rashid Amin, Anisuzzaman, Shahjahan Ahmed Bikash, Kawser Hasan Tagor, AFM Moniruzzaman Shipu, Mohammed Nazrul Islam Aghrani, Shantana Shahreen, and Aloptogin Tushar are also on display.
Curator Mrittika Kamal told The Business Standard that the centennial celebration began earlier this year at Charupith Gallery in Jashore with strong local engagement, before being brought to Dhaka for a national audience.

The 178-piece display, which opened on 10 August, will conclude tomorrow at 6pm with a screening of Tareque Masud's documentary on Sultan, Adam Surat, at the Faculty of Fine Arts' Osman Jamal Auditorium.
Kamal noted the exhibition has drawn large daily crowds, including students and visitors who learned of it through social media.
"Our goal is to introduce SM Sultan to the next generation," she said.
