A R Rahman makes historic Royal Albert Hall debut
In a landmark moment for global music, the legendary A.R. Rahman made his long-awaited debut at London's Royal Albert Hall. Rahman partnered with pioneering composer and RAH Associate Artiste Rushil Ranjan to present the world premiere of Rangreza (The Colourist), a monumental orchestral commission bridging the spiritual gap between Eastern and Western classical traditions.
The performance featured a breathtaking tapestry of talent, merging Rahman's own Sunshine Orchestra from Chennai with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Reflecting on the work's intent to foster global harmony, Rahman stated, "What I was imagining with this piece was that in today's world, can we go past our differences and go into unison."
Under the baton of Melvin Tay, the ensemble was joined by the London Voices and singer Abi Sampa. The evening also showcased reimagined orchestral arrangements of Rahman's iconic scores from Roja to Rockstar. For the maestro, the venue itself added to the gravity of the premiere: "To stand in this legendary hall with new beginnings and timeless memories intertwined is truly humbling and inspiring," he remarked.
