‘I’m a human being’: Cena finally addresses fans, calls them abusive
John Cena’s shocking heel turn took centre stage on Monday Night Raw, as he unleashed two decades of frustration on WWE fans
At its essence, WWE strives to tell stories of good vs evil - through larger than life characters and scripted performances. And right now it's in the midst of adding another chapter to the storied career of John Cena, who after being the most beloved 'good guy' for 25 years, had shockingly turned heel (becoming the bad guy) by turning his back on the fans earlier this month.
After two weeks of anticipation, Cena finally addressed the fans on the 18 March edition of 'Monday Night Raw' to a stadium full of jeers from the audience in Brussels, Belgium.
Cena brutally attacking his Wrestlemania 41 main event opponent Cody Rhodes, sent shockwaves through the wrestling industry. No one thought they would ever see a 'heel' Cena, and fans had been buzzing with excitement to hear what he has to say. And true to his brand, John Cena did not disappoint.
Cena shocked the fans that he felt that he had been the victim of an abusive relationship with fickle wrestling fans, who in the past had eventually gotten tired of Cena and were never satisfied, no matter what Cena did to win them over.
He unburdened 20+ years of pent-up anger and frustration saying "I am not a babyface (good character), I am not a heel (bad character). I am a human being."
But Cena did not just call out his haters, he revealed that his so-called-supporters were just as bad to him as anyone else. According to the 16-time world champion, they used him to vicariously feel better about themselves, sitting on their couches and watching him be great. "You buy words like 'Never give up,' I live them," claimed Cena.
For wrestling fans who grew up watching John Cena as a role model and someone who stood for values of 'Hustle, Loyalty and Respect', seeing Cena berating fans was shocking.
His diatribe was eventually interrupted by WWE champion Cody Rhodes. Cody said that he wanted the real John Cena, the one he once looked up to as an inspiration and a role model in this business, and that he wasn't very excited to go wrestle this whiny, sulking version of John Cena.
With only 4 weeks to go till Wrestlemania 41, Raw was action-packed with stories building to a climax ahead of the biggest show of the year. Rhea Ripley seemingly inserted herself into the Women's World Championship match making it a triple threat between her, Bianca Belair and Iyo Sky.
In the main event, Bronn Brekker successfully defended his intercontinental championship against Finn Balor. Next week's Raw is shaping up to be another can't miss episode, with John Cena and Cody Rhodes set to appear again.
Smackdown this friday night should also be great television (or Netflix), as CM Punk, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns will meet in what's set to be a tense confrontation and hopefully shed some light on their paths to Wrestlemania
