Busan International Film Festival to pivot to a competitive format

The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) is marking its 30th anniversary with a major shift, transitioning from a non-competitive showcase to a competition format.
Running from 17 to 26 September, the festival will now feature 14 Asian films competing for five top awards, including a new Busan Award. Notably, the grand prize winner will close the festival.
Festival chair Park Kwang-su emphasised BIFF's aim to elevate Asian cinema globally. Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul will design the awards.
Leadership changes include new festival director Jung Han-seok and program director Karen Park. BIFF will also revamp its programming structure, integrating New Currents and Jiseok into the main competition and expanding Korean Cinema Today into Vision-Asia and Vision-Korea.
