AR Rahman steps before the camera in Moonwalk
Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman, long celebrated for shaping the emotional landscape of Indian cinema through music, is preparing to surprise audiences in a new role — this time in front of the camera. Rahman will make his full-fledged acting debut in Moonwalk, a comedy film directed by Manoj N S and headlined by Prabhudeva, with a theatrical release planned for May 2026.
While Rahman has previously appeared in brief cameos, Moonwalk marks the first time the 59-year-old composer will take on a proper acting role. He will be seen as a humorous yet temperamental young film director, a character the filmmaker describes as both unexpected and charming. Adding to his presence, Rahman has also sung all five songs in the film, ensuring his voice runs through the entire soundtrack.
Speaking to News18, director Manoj N S described the experience of working with Rahman and Prabhudeva as creatively fulfilling. "It was a wonderful experience shooting the song 'Mayile' with Prabhudeva sir and AR Rahman sir," he said, adding that the number "has turned out well and is sure to be a feast for movie lovers in theatres". He also praised Prabhudeva's performance, calling it "one of his best dance performances."
Rahman's acting role, however, grew organically. After initially featuring in the song sequence, he was offered an expanded role, which he readily agreed to take on. The director said the resulting scene has been designed as an unexpected moment for audiences and described the experience of directing Rahman in his first full acting sequence as particularly rewarding. He also observed a noticeable change on set once Rahman embraced the role, with cast and crew enjoying the rare sight of the celebrated composer fully immersing himself in acting and clearly relishing the experience.
Prabhudeva plays Babootty, a lively film choreographer, in what is described as a substantial role. The film also features an ensemble cast including Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan, Yogi Babu, Swaminathan and Redin Kingsley, with a special reveal involving Yogi Babu promised closer to release.
Moonwalk also reunites Rahman and Prabhudeva, whose past collaborations — including Gentleman, Kadhalan and Minsara Kanavu — remain iconic for their electrifying music and dance, making this reunion one keenly anticipated by fans.
