61 years of James: The man who defined Bangladeshi rock

Faruq Mahfuz Anam James, affectionately known as "Guru" by fans, turned 61 on Thursday, celebrating a remarkable journey spanning more than four decades at the forefront of Bangladesh's rock music scene. A National Award-winning musician, James is widely regarded as one of the subcontinent's most iconic rock singers, whose influence has inspired generations of fans both in Bangladesh and abroad.
Born in 1964 in Naogaon, Rajshahi, and raised in Chattogram, James faced early opposition from his family over his pursuit of music. Determined to follow his passion, he left home in 1976 and began performing live at Aziz Boarding in Pahartali, captivating audiences with his raw talent and magnetic presence. In 1977, he formed the band Feelings as lead vocalist and guitarist, which was later renamed Nagar Baul, a name that has since become inseparable from his own. The band's debut album, Station Road (1987), introduced timeless hits such as Taray Taray Rotiye Debo, Maa, Bangladesh, Pagla Hawaa, Dushtu Chheler Dol, Guru Ghor Banaila Ki Diya, and Mirabai. Many of these songs were adapted from poetry, reflecting his unique ability to blend literature and music.
During the 1990s, James, alongside LRB and ARK, came to be celebrated as the 'Big Three of Bangladeshi Rock', a trio that reshaped the nation's music scene. His signature psychedelic rock style, unmatched stage charisma, and electrifying performances drew fans in droves, creating an enduring connection that transcended generations.
Beyond rock, James made his mark in Dhallywood as a playback singer, winning National Film Awards for Desha: The Leader (2014) and Swatta (2017). He also ventured into Bollywood, contributing to films like Gangster (2006), Woh Lamhe (2006), Life… in a Metro (2007), and Warning (2013). Despite numerous international opportunities, he chose to return to Bangladesh, dedicating himself to nurturing the country's music scene and mentoring young talent.
As a solo artist, James has released eight albums, from Anannya (1989) to Kaal Jamuna (2009), collaborating with renowned lyricists, composers, and musicians across Bangladesh. His versatility extends beyond music—James is a photographer and media entrepreneur, founding Red Dot Entertainment, a production house that has become a significant platform for artistic expression in the country.
On his 61st birthday, tributes poured in from fans, fellow musicians, and admirers around the globe. Social media platforms were filled with shared memories, concert highlights, and heartfelt messages celebrating the life and career of a man whose music has become a cultural touchstone. Even after six decades of life and over 40 years of music, Nagar Baul James continues to inspire and entertain, cementing his legacy as a true pioneer of Bangladeshi rock music.
