Water level of several rivers continue to rise in northern region
According to the government estimate, about 74,000 people in 103 unions of five the districts have been marooned
The Teesta and the Brahmaputra have crossed the danger level in Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat. The water level in the rivers continues to rise due to heavy downpour and the onrush from the hills. Thousands of people have been marooned in several northern districts.
The water levels of 16 rivers in Kurigram have increased. The flood situation has worsened in the areas adjacent to the Dharla, Dudhkumar and the Brahmaputra as the rivers are flowing above the danger level.
Though the water levels of the Dharla and the Teesta may decrease in next two to three days, the Dudhkumar and the Brahmaputra will continue swelling, according to Md Ariful Islam, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board.

Meanwhile, the water level of Teesta River has increased by two centimetres at Ghat point in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur.
An official of the Water Development Board in Nilphamari said the Teesta was flowing two centimetres above the danger level at Dalia Point in Nilphamari on Monday morning. Then it decreased by two centimetres at around 9:00 am in the morning.
According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the WDB in Dalia, 77 millimetres of rainfall was recorded at the Teesta basin in the last 24 hours.
KM Tariqul Islam, divisional commissioner of Rangpur, said, "The low-lying areas have been inundated due to the rising water levels of four major rivers in the region. Tk19,26,000 and 745 tonnes of GR rice have been allotted for the five flood-affected districts of the division. According to the government estimate, about 74,000 people in 103 unions of five the districts have been marooned."
