The Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources will take punitive action within the next seven days against staff involved in issuing excessive electricity bills to household consumers.
It will also form a task force headed by an additional secretary to investigate the matter, read a press release on Thursday. The division addressed the issue after receiving hundreds of complaints regarding inflated electricity bills that surfaced from all corners of the country.
Household consumers of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd (Desco), Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) and the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) recently received such disproportionate bills.

"We will not charge consumers additional electricity bills under any circumstances,"said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid while presiding over the virtual ADP implementation and progress meeting of power sector companies on Thursday.
Managing directors of the power distribution companies regretted issuing inflated bills and decided to explain the issue over the mass media.
In 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Power Division had 104 projects to implement. As of May, 72.36 percent financial and 70.61 percent physical progress of the ADP has been made.
