Two separate cases have been filed against more than a thousand garment workers in Dhaka's Ashulia over alleged assault and vandalism in two garment factories during a labour protest.

A total of 139 people have been named in the cases and 960 unidentified people were accused.

Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique told The Business Standard that joint forces have arrested a total of 16 people in connection with the cases since yesterday (13 October).

12 workers detained over violence during protest demanding wages for 'no work, no pay' period in Ashulia

Of them, four were arrested in the case filed by Ssain Apparels Limited and 12 were arrested in the case filed by Future Clothing Limited, said Ashulia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Kamal Hossain.

When contacted, Future Clothing Limited's Manager (HR, Admin and Compliance) Emdadul Haque and Ssain Apparels Limited's Assistant Manager (Admin) Sujat Mallik refused to comment on the matter.

Earlier yesterday, joint forces arrested four workers of Ssain Apparels Limited and eight of another factory on charges of beating factory officials.

The four detained Ssain Apparels workers were staging a protest demanding wages for the 'no work, no pay policy' period, recently implemented by factory authorities amid labour unrest.
