Sammilita Parishad gets new leadership

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has appointed Quazi Muniruzzaman as Sammilita Parishad's new president.

Abul Kalam has become the new secretary general. 

The announcement was made by former minister and BHMEA President Redwan Ahmed at a meeting in the Uttara Club on Monday (7 October). 

They will succeed Tipu Munshi and Atiqul Islam, the former president and secretary general, respectively.

Quazi is a former president of the BGMEA and Abul is the managing director of Chaity Group.

In the meeting, Redwan Ahmed said, "The decision came from the former presidents' forum, emphasising new leadership in light of the current situation with Tipu Munshi being in jail, and Atiqul Islam in hiding, following the fall of the Awami League government. This situation has created a leadership crisis within the council."

Also present at the meeting, former BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said there were threats of potential sanctions from the USA and European Union. 

"Thankfully, we managed to steer away from that risk," he added.

BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem also spoke at the event. 

"The current BGMEA board is committed to fostering a stable business environment despite various challenges. We have faith in this board," he said.

The meeting was attended by notable figures, including former BGMEA presidents SM Fazlul Huq, Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, and presided over by Mostafa Golam Quddus.

BNP leader Zainul Abedin Farroque was also present at the meeting.
