Fines to be imposed for honking in Dhaka airport 'silent zone' from today

Honking in the newly declared "silent zone" around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will result in fines or imprisonment from today (1 October), according to officials.

The initiative was formally launched today (1 October) at 10am in front of the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority (CAAB) by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources.

Following the inauguration, a procession was held in front of CAAB's headquarters, followed by a discussion chaired by CAAB Chairman, Air Vice Marshal Md Manjur Kabir Bhuiyan.
Earlier, on 29 September, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) announced the designation of the 1.5 km stretch around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport as a "silent zone," prohibiting the use of vehicle horns following the Noise Pollution Control Rules of 2006.
Dhaka Airport's Executive Director Group Captain Kamrul Islam confirmed to The Business Standard that from today, honking will be prohibited in the airport area and the main road stretching from Uttara's Scholastica campus to Le Méridien Hotel.
Violators may face fines or imprisonment.
