Former OnePlus CEO Carl Pei's venture, Nothing, has unveiled the Ear (open), a new set of open wearable stereo (OWS) earbuds. Unlike traditional earbuds, which often feature either active or passive noise-cancelling, the Ear (open) is designed to keep you aware of your surroundings.

Rather than blocking out external sounds, these earbuds allow users to stay in tune with their environment, whether it's the sound of birds or the hustle and bustle of the city, without sacrificing audio quality.

Due to the design and functionality, the buds serve a niche group of people who are exclusively looking for a pair of earbuds that offers extensive transparency.

Without a proper seal, open-ear designs cannot reproduce sound frequencies quite as effectively as the in-ear ones. That is why open-ear designs usually struggle with bass response, but the large drivers in the Nothing Ear (open) help to minimise this issue to some extent, PCMag reports.

Even with their unusual form factor, the Nothing Ear (open) sounds pretty great at moderate volumes, AndroidPolice  reports, stating, "Audio is rich and full, though not as high-quality as what you'll get out of top-tier buds from manufacturers like Sony or Bose."

According to Nothing, the Ear (open) earbuds offer up to eight hours of battery life on a single charge, and up to 30 hours when used with the charging case. For those in a hurry, a quick 10-minute charge provides two hours of listening time.

The charging case is quite different from the typical designs. It's a slim, 19-millimetre thick, capsule-shaped case with a transparent lid.

Each earbud weighs around 8.1 grams, making them the heaviest earbuds Nothing has released. However, the hook design helps distribute the weight across the ear for a more comfortable fit.

Powered by Bluetooth 5.1, the Ear (open) can connect to two Bluetooth devices at once, easily switching between them. Gamers can also take advantage of the "Low Lag Mode," which reduces latency for a smoother gaming experience.

In addition to these features, the device comes with integrated ChatGPT, allowing users to access real-time information directly from the earbuds, making it easy to stay informed on the go.

Priced at $149, the Ear (open) is now available for pre-order across the US, Canada, and Europe.
