Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam has assured that comprehensive security measures will be taken for the upcoming Durga Puja.

"The police will remain on high alert to ensure safety at all Puja venues," he said at a meeting on law and order and security measures ahead of Durga Puja at the Police Headquarters today (23 September).

He also emphasised that the police have devised a three-tier security system covering the pre-Puja period, the main Durga Puja celebrations, and the post-Puja immersion of idols.

Police have already initiated security operations focused on Puja venues, he added.

The police are vigilant to prevent any untoward incidents during Durga Puja, he said, adding that cyber monitoring has been intensified to curb the spread of rumours on social media.

The IGP urged leaders of the puja celebration committees to contact the national emergency service 999 or their nearest police station in case of any emergency.

Highlighting the timing of potential criminal activity, he noted that offenders often target puja venues late at night or in the early hours.

He called on Puja organisers to ensure continuous security by keeping CCTV or IP cameras active and deploying volunteers alongside law enforcement at all puja venues.

Expressing optimism, the IGP said with the collective efforts of everyone, the upcoming Durga Puja would be celebrated in a festive and joyful environment, upholding the communal harmony that Bangladesh is known for.

During Durga Puja, uniformed and plainclothes police will be on duty, along with SWAT, Crisis Response Teams, Quick Response Teams, Crime Scene Vans, and Bomb Disposal Units, all on standby.

In addition, monitoring cells will be established at Police Headquarters and other police units to oversee security operations during the festival.

Durga Puja will be celebrated at 32,666 venues across the country.
