A group of unidentified individuals attacked Monjur Ahmed, the general secretary of a unit of Swechasebak League in Sylhet, last night (8 September) and allegedly cut the veins of his hands and legs.

Rumel Ahmed, another party activist, was injured in the attack.

Local sources said the attackers cut the veins in Monjur's hands and legs, leading to excessive blood loss.

"The attack on Monjur and Rumel occurred near their residence in Bonkolapara. Monjur is critically injured and has been sent to Dhaka for treatment," said Sayeed Md Abdullah, the councillor of Sylhet City Corporation's ward no 7.

Rumel Ahmed, the party activist injured during the attack, claimed the attack stemmed from a political rivalry with leaders and activists of the Chhatra Dal and Chhatrashibir, dating back to the last city corporation elections.

However, the identities of the attackers could not be confirmed officially.

Md Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sylhet's Airport police station, said, "We received reports of the attack and are looking into the details. No formal complaint has been lodged at the station yet."
