Secretariat clash: Over 4,000 Ansar members sued for ‘obstructing police work’

A total of 4,114 Bangladesh Ansar members have been sued in a case filed with the Paltan Police Station in Dhaka for allegedly obstructing police work in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat last night.
Sazzad Hossain Bhuiyan, deputy superintendent of the police station, filed the case today (26 August), station Officer-in-Charge Mollah Md Khalid Hossain said.
"A total of 114 people have been named as accused in the case. Of them, 95 have been arrested," he added.

The remaining 4,000 accused are unnamed.
Ansar members, protesting the nationalisation of their jobs, blocked the Secretariat with advisers of the interim government and members of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement inside the building last night.
Later, heeding to movement coordinator Hasnat Abdullah's call, students rushed to the spot to rescue them. However, Ansar members attacked the students near Gate-2 and Gate-3 areas of the Secretariat, resulting in more students joining the clash and subduing the protesters.
Additional police and army forces were deployed in the area.
A total of 382 Ansar members have been arrested in multiple cases filed over the incident and taken to a Dhaka court today.
"189 Ansar members in cases filed with Shahbagh police, 98 in cases filed with Ramna police and 95 in cases filed with Paltan police have been produced to the CMM court," Saifur Rahman, general record officer (GRO) of the court (Shabagh) told The Business Standard.
