Ex-MP Nixon Chowdhury sued over vandalism at Bhanga Police Station

A case has been filed against ex-MP and presidium member of Jubo League Mujibur Rahman Nixon Chowdhury as the prime accused over an attack and vandalism at the Bhanga Police Station in Faridpur.
The case, filed by Bhanga Police Station Sub-inspector (SI) Md Azaduzzaman yesterday (16 September), names 29 people, including Hamirdi Union Parishad Chairman Khokon Mia as the second accused.
Several unnamed others were also accused in the case, confirmed Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Shamsul Azam.
According to Bhanga police, the attack caused damages worth at least Tk40 lakh. Earlier, Algi Union Chairman Md Siddiqur Rahman was arrested in another case filed under the Speedy Trial Act.
On 4 September, the Election Commission announced in a gazette that two unions of Bhanga upazila under Faridpur-4 constituency were included in Faridpur-2. Protesting the decision, locals blocked the Dhaka-Khulna and Faridpur-Bhanga highways on 5 September.
The agitation was initially suspended for three days after assurances from the UNO but later resumed on 9 -11 September and 14 -15 September.
On Monday (15 September), protesters vandalised and set fire to the offices of the UNO, upazila election officer, Bhanga police station, highway police office and several government vehicles. They also blocked roads and railways, disrupting communication with 21 districts in the south, causing public suffering.
The situation in Bhanga is now normal. Police, RAB, APBn and the army are deployed to maintain law and order, and traffic on the highways is running smoothly.
Meanwhile, protesters have announced a four-day suspension of their movement.
