BNP office set on fire in Teknaf, documents gutted
Local BNP leaders and activists alleged that the fire was a planned act carried out by identified local drug traders and supporters of the fallen autocracy, operating under the patronage of a local Jamaat leader
An arson attack on a temporary office of the BNP in Teknaf municipality of Cox's Bazar has left office furniture and important documents gutted.
The incident occurred early today (5 April) in the Jaliapara Burmese Market area under Ward No 7 of the municipality, according to Abdur Razzaq, president of the BNP's Teknaf municipal unit.
Local BNP leaders and activists alleged that the fire was a planned act carried out by identified local drug traders and supporters of the fallen autocracy, operating under the patronage of a local Jamaat leader.
BNP leaders claimed the attack was intended to disrupt the party's political activities and demanded that those involved be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
"Some local criminals had been issuing threats for a while. We suspect they set the office on fire," said Abdur Razzaq.
He added that several names have already surfaced and are currently being verified, reiterating his demand for legal action against all perpetrators. However, he did not clarify further.
Condemning the incident, Teknaf upazila BNP General Secretary Shahadat Hossain termed the act "heinous" and expressed confidence that the culprits would be found soon with the assistance of law enforcement authorities.
Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, said a police team visited the spot after receiving the news.
"The matter is being investigated. Necessary legal action will be taken once the involved individuals are identified," the OC said.
He further noted that police have increased surveillance in the area to prevent any further untoward incidents following the arson.
